My father was an honest cop, in West Town, in Pulaski Park, Chicago, in our neighborhood. No, we were not moved when the park was built, but some of my good friends growing up were. I still love that park… Anyways, back to Pop. I will always remember him telling me, “Krzysztof, without integrity you are nothing. No matter what you do, who you are with, where you work, without integrity and honesty you are the poorest man alive.” He was gunned down when I was 15, and I am now following in his footsteps, trying to clean up this cesspool of a town. We had a brick thrown through our window during his wake- it had only the words “Should have taken the money.” My family is Polish, hard-working, and above all, honest. We grew up lower middle class, with myself & my older brother, who left for New York City to be in advertising. I don’t know how he does it- to me most of advertising is lying. I still love my ma above all other people- her name is Ludmita. I graduated high school, and went straight to the police academy. So, there you go, short and sweet- that is what led me to the force, and the force led me to here….

So, 6 years after graduation, and the f#*@ing Chigago PD has me in the only place they could put me- Pulaski Park, West Town, Chicago. So I deal with all the things I know. Drunk Andrzej, who is great until he has a bottle of Potato Vodka, then watch for his fists. Wandering Wielislaw, who always seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Sweet little Seweyna, who married that thug Rostek, and seems to always be “falling down the stairs.” Typical neighborhood, right? Until recently, that is.

It started with a call that there was a disturbance at old Lubomir’s place. That is where my life changed.

I got a call that there was a disturbance at Lubomir’s place- that is, old Lubomir, not young Lubomir, kid Lubomir, or adult Lubomir- Lubomir is a popular name in our neighborhood. It appeared that old Lubo had killed young Helene, but that made no sense at all! She was practically his granddaughter, as close as their families had been. As I am searching for clues some guy named Henry literally appears out of the shadows. He convinces me that vampires are real!!! and something about a Red Court- which makes sense, vampires and blood…He shows me the signs that Helene was killed by a vampire, and we go after the vampire.

Unfortunately the vampire gets away. I say good night to Henry- nice guy, and we exchange info to get together in the future. I go to my local speakeasy, the Seraphim, head downstairs, to get a well-deserved vodka, and there is a naked guy with sawed off wings- no, I am not joking! His name is Benny, and now my eyes are wide open. I mean, how can they not be when you meet a Seraph in the Seraphim?

Benny has turned out to be a huge asset. I brought him home to get some clothes, and he met Mom (Lumita). He has shown to be able to be innately tell if someone is good or evil, and has proven his mettle in fights. I help him adjust to living in a human world.
